FAQs on Technology and Policy

Q: Can students publish and create material online?

A: Yes, according to District Policy 2360 students can publish online to audiences outside the walls of our schools.  Teachers and students must adhere to the following below when considering creating a web pages, blogs, portfolios, etc.

  •  Subject matter on Web pages should relate to curriculum, instruction, school-authorized activities, and general information that is appropriate and of interest to others, or should relate to the District, or the schools within the District.

  • Staff or student work may be published only as it relates to a class project, course, or other school-related activity.

  • Contents of web pages, blogs, portfolios, etc. may include only the first name and the initial of the student's last name, unless written permission is given by the parent or guardian to publish a student's full name.

  •  Contents of web pages may not include a student's phone number, address, or a  any e-mail address.

  • Regarding photo or video of students, web authors/publishers must make sure the student's parent/guardian has agreed to the Photo Form which can be found on Genesis.  A small photo icon means the parent/guardian has consented.

  • Published creation should never reveal the physical location of a specific student at a specific time. 

 

Q: Is publishing online one of our standards?

A: Yes, NJSLS Anchor Standard for Writing for ALL grade levels is the following:

  • NJSLSA.W6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.

 

Q: Are "others" students or people outside of the school?

A: Yes, as long as the guidelines below are followed, interaction and collaboration is permissible.

  • Interaction and collaboration on the  Web pages should relate to curriculum, instruction, school-authorized activities, and general information that is appropriate and of interest to others, or should relate to the District, or the schools within the District.

  •  Interaction and collaboration on the  Web can be done as it relates to a class project, course, or other school-related activity.

  • Interaction and collaboration on the  Web may include only the first name and the initial of the student's last name, unless written permission is given by the parent or guardian to publish a student's full name.

  •  Interaction and collaboration on the  Web may not include a student's phone number, address, or a  any e-mail address.

  • Interaction and collaboration on the  Web should never reveal the physical location of a specific student at a specific time.
